ArtStar : finally a reality show with artists
Wednesday, May 10, 2006

Ok, so now that we've all done our necessary willy swinging.... (I had really hoped never to see THAT photo again)
Someone has finally made a reality show with real live artists, ArtStar in NY which apparently features a video artist, a photographer, a performance/Internet artist, and a painter as well as a 'retired social worker-turned-sculptor', an FIT undergraduate student, and an action stylist/puppeteer. (This info. gathered from Art Fag City : a rad NY art blog). Their show works on an apprentice type vibe where the artists have to interact with famous important people like Jeff Koons and then make work for a show, kinda without being fired (I presume) - personally I think it might be more fun to vote artists off (or onto) an island, but still.
So I've been thinking who to cast in a South African version, preferably one where the artists all have to live in a house together while working. So far:
Tay Dall(Visionary, non conformist etc. also looks good in red lipstick)
Ed Young (because we clearly haven't seen enough of him naked)
Julia Clark( because she dresses well, and her and ed locked in a house will make hours of entertaining drama and witty sparring)
Wayne Barker (and unlimited vodka - anyone go to Sessions iKapa?)
Tracey Rose (again, the conference)
Malcom Payne ('cause he might just bring out his 70's lycra bowie outfit. With glitter makeup)
Sharlene Khan (for her humble, quiet presence and drawing skills)
Storm Janse van Rensburg (cause he's hot and related to a supermodel)
Thembinkosi Goniwe (just for fun)
Any other suggestions?

so, for a variety of reasons, i decided to keep the name. Heck! I have dated enough damn artists in my time even though I am not strictly speaking the specific source for this in-joke (credits MP). i fully support your list of artists and would love to be a fly on the toilet wall in that house but perhaps you are forgetting a very important person: Max! what would it be like without him? I overheard that he was NOT at the opening of " Not yet famous". Bad sign. Doomed. I am afraid to say, but this curse might result in the predictive title never comming true. I am quite disapointed that no one has yet taken up the role of successor to Max: what are we going to do the day he decides to retire? Who will be Official Quiet Lurker Opening Aficionado (beard optional)? For a while I thought it might be Zachary Yorke but he left town and was far too animated, come to think of it. David Lewis? Frank Latter? am I on the right track here? any suggestions?
you are so right, my aologies Luckily though Mad Max is still around - he was at the AVA opening of horrid paintings this week. More importantly he's having a show of his paintnigs at the AVA at the end of the month.... not to be missed
my comment (no 1) makes no sense now...was meant to display my contentious Blogger name...which might still change in future...but pays homage to all the long-sufferings etc. etc. apologies.

where are the booby's in this place?
i thought ybagirlfriend was ruth?
Ruth here. It's my first time, so be gentle, please. YBA Girlfriend is a label I've always resented. I've been intrigued to read what someone who willingly takes it on has to say.
i see that Max is having a show at the AVA. Let's all go and talk to him at the opening. We could crowd around him and mumble?
