Artwork of the Week

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I went to Max Wolpe's show last night at the AVA. There were some other artists showing, but the impression they left on my mind is so slight that I'll just ignore it. I was crazy about Max's paintings though. They're really eccentric, with about a thousand different shades of brown, in these busy compositions with names like Taking Tea on Oxford Street. The work was cool. But really it would be nothing without Max Wolpe's presence. It allows the work to make sense, almost like a performance that contextualises the paintings. Max beats his paintings to be Artwork of the Week
The other highlight of the evening was overhearing Estelle Jacobs talking to Ed Young. Apparently, he is Robert Sloon. Sorry, hope that's not too embarrassing.
