Almost as Interesting as Soccer. Art Auction at 34 on Long
Wednesday, June 14, 2006

I went to the auction at 34 on Long, and though the time would have been better spent watching Switzerland and France, this auction thing was quite an eye-opener. Obviously 34 on Long is a commercial gallery, but the crap that sold was bizarre... why would anyone want a 2 metre Norman Catherine totem pole? or a pomegranate by Peter Clarke? And the unlimited edition Takashi Murakami Kaikai and Kiki dolls that sold for R800, I found on the net for $80. It just confirms what I knew... the people who are buying art aren't educated, or at least not in the way we want them to be, and there's probably no hope for anyone trying to sell anything a bit edgy. Except for Matt Hindley, who sold for a good price, but I believe he is the new buyer's darling anyway. It's different, scary, scary world out there.
But then again, there were some bargains like cheap Claudette Schreuders and Zwelethu Mthwethwa. Maybe I'll go buy some next time.

OK I hate to point this out, but seriously Matt has not been edgy since he started 'painting'. His work is not only utterly soulless and unbearably trendy, it's also terribly painted -no understanding of colour, paint application etc etc. Why won't he just stop?
because he is making lots of money...
Actually the Norman Catherine totem pole looks very lovely in our downstairs loo, it has really added to the ambience.....so there!
always good to have when someone tries barging in on your number two
