Ed Young's girlfriend Ruth Sacks has been working hard in Luanda recently... or so we thought. Instead she appears to be making bad art on the beaches with young studs. Ah, that tropical lifestyle.

Listen twat: imperialism doesn't have to have anything to do with race: it's the imposing of an ideology, culture and way of life on a less powerful entity in order to feather your own nest or puff up your tail feathers...or as more succinctly put "Imperialism is a policy of extending control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and/or maintenance of empires" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperialism). art world imperialism: the dominance of Contemporary (oh so.. sing the little song) Art , the white cube, kkkurated shows, Documentation etc. It's a battelfield man, and people like ruth are the aspiring kommandants. get it? keep race out of it. it's far more complex. p.s. i don't have a dog, nor a god for that matter. i spose i will just have to play with my "white friends" boo hoo.

We understand that you know how to look up things on Wikipedia. My worry is that even though you seem to understand the definition you do not know how to apply it yet. Would you have made this comment if ruth happend to make this piece with Cameron Platter on the pleasant beaches of durban. You dont need a dog.
so why is it that if your making art in South Africa with your friends they must be white, but in Angola they must be black? Is South Africa not also Africa and therefore equally full of black people? Oh right u live Cape Town.
Oooh, Anonymous is opening a big can of worms. I'm getting the impression that you're calling white artists in South Africa (esp Cape Town) racist. Are you sure this is really appropriate? Educate yourself first about the situation of the arts in South Africa, then you are welcome to blab your mouth.
too many anons here... personally i have no problem with anyone making art anywhere at anytime - with or without anyone else. However, my argument above (top) was about something different: machinations of power and the significance of who makes what calls. if you don't get it (and need to insult me and my wiki elucidation), i am now too bored to explain. fiddle with you black white or cerise friends while rome (or goma) burns buddy. we could have some meaty chats, instead we must look up endless assholes. i am just trying to figure it out myself. forgive me.
These are meaty chats, so chill out and don't be so indignant. What disturbs me is that you see a machination of power in this photograph without any knowledge of the context... it seems you are looking for imperialists under the bed.

This is exactly my problem... you would imagine that someone claiming to be a sort of a panopticon (seeing all the context everytime) would be able to temper their opinions a bit. Beyond that you are seeing a bigger picture that is a total product of your own paranoia or prejudice. What makes you assume that there is a power play at work here. And why do you assume that ruth is the instigator of the politics. Or are you seeing something we're not. Oh wait if you enlarge the right corner you can see a horde of oppressed masses, or is it a pyramid with an eye in it.
