How Now Joao?

Thursday, June 08, 2006

Gallerist Joao Ferreira (owner of Joao Ferreira Gallery) behaved incredibly badly on Tuesday night at the Last Braai. You'd imagine that if the world was going to end you'd act with a bit more dignity. After making bumbling but indecent proposals to both Georgina Gratrix and Renzske Scholtz, he moved on to Bettina Malcolmes. Allegedly, after she told him she wasn't interested because she is lesbian, Joao punched her in the stomach and called her a dyke. Now is this acceptable behaviour from any member of the art world(or world in general)? No matter how drunk? Good luck to everyone who is off to Basel with him this week.

I remember a time when Joao came into Jo'burg bar when I was working there. Just after he got back from Basel last year, (Just rich from Julia Clarks success). He drank three quarters of a bottle of Johnny Walker Black, and became increasingly abusive, and then incoherent. But then he did tip R700. I bet he got shock when his creditcard bill came round! I wonder if he remembers?

let me explain: joao, i would imagine, has latent homosexual tendencies, no? so when he punched bettina (did this really happen?...i was too busy with other pressing business to be at 666 braai) Was it possibly less out of frustration at being rejected and more an act of envy for her out-the-closet laissez-faire attitude? prehaps it was also because she is like a very beautiful boy, just his type? He's always had a thing for George (maybe it's the name?). Come to think of it Renzske also sounds quite a lot like a boy's name. maybe he didn't have his contacts in. freud would have a field day. anyhow, let's forgive him. i always do in the end.
