One more time with feeling

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Okay, so Mr. Sloon has already written a post about Virginia MacKenny and Gabi Ncqobo's 'Second to None' at the National Gallery, but since someone recently commented that "young horny boys run ArtHeat" I figured that it might be fair to at least have a woman comment on this show. Unfortunately, however, Robert is right in many cases...

In fact, I went to the opening and left feeling very close to seethingly angry at the banality of it all (I was also in a distinctly foul post-Friday night mood, but still). I mean, really, do we not have any young contemporary woman artists in this country? Maybe someone who's read something as recent as, I dunno, Kristeva (or is that even to much to hope for). Oh wait, but there were about 50 Zanele Muholi's. Joy. All of which were seen about a month ago at Michael Stevenson. Oh and Nandi - Anyone see a pattern here? I mean it's not that there's necessarily anything that inherently wrong with these artists, it just seems that transporting almost an entire exhibition about 'black lesbian identity' into a show about women's struggles etc. is a very simplistic and easy way to fulfill a quota issue. Although Carol-Anne Gainer was there, and she's kinda young, and kinda hot, and oh wait the curators girlfriend (seriously just one show without her Virginia), plus she could have done a much more interesting performance/installation etc. piece than her Modernist urine.

Why not some women who are capable of just a teeny bit of fun? Dan's allowed, you know, cause he's just a naughty boy, well done. But women really are capable of a bit of wit, charm and whimsy - just look at the Guerilla Girls.

Anyway, so that's my point of view as an official angry (post) feminist. But everyone else really did seem to like it.....

who would you suggest, josephine? maybe tracey rose? oh but wait, she's on the show. surely you'd have to describe her as capable of just a teeny bit of fun?.... who else? it would be interesting to know who you have in mind - other than some stuffed pigeons. but i have to agree, virginia seriously needs to leave carol-ann off her exhibitions once in a while.

Kathryn Smith, Doreen Southwood (from when she still made work), Julia Clark all come immedietely to mind. I think Clark, particularly would have been really useful here. Your right, Rose is capable of fun - and her video was one of the better things on the exhibition - but c'mon giant dildos and "fucking flowers" - not the most complex or intelligent of metaphors

just saw the show... my skin crawled when i saw the pretentious white folk trying to look 'arty' in Karina Turok's portraiture... what's with burying yourself in the sand so your tits get to flop on the beach, Josie Boraine? And that expression on your face? Is this about the deep connection you forged with nature while being a supermodel?
And Marlene Dumas.. so INFORMAL lying on your side getting jiggy with a piece of your own art? that's my respect for your critical distance gone for a ball of shit.
Very interesting comment on the photographer's perspective, that white people need to act up like this to be 'art' whereas black people get to be art just by being looked at.
creepy.
