And Now For Some More News From A Darker Metropolis…

This is Simon Gush the artist, curator and logistical coordinator who has recently opened The Parking Gallery. http://www.parking-gallery.net This experimental space is described on the website as starting in 'a storeroom of an underground garage in the eastern part of the Johannesburg inner city'. But the space is not so dingy or obscure as this description might lead you to believe. Some may find the trip there a little hair raising, especially those less acquainted with the inner city at 6pm. Bad lighting, bad sign posting, pot holes in the road and missing manhole covers combine with commuters, taxis, and scrap metal trolley pushers criss-crossing the road at high-speed, random intervals all in the desperate daily scrabble to get home.Once you reach the space itself you will find a well-painted, large proportioned, white cube space that is by no means the broom cupboard under the stairs it may sound. Gush and his partners, Hannes Olivier and Lester Adams, have created a space that whilst still experimental in the concepts behind the artwork is very professional in its physicality.
Here are some pictures from the previous shows including: Ms Lace’s fish (Federigo? I think.); Lester Adams describing the joys of installing thousands of strands of fish gut; a shot of Nathaniel Stern’s video at interval featuring creepy Mr Woody Allen; and Nathaniel in conversation with Anthea Moys.

Do you gautengers do anything other than blatant promotion? I mean apart from whining about Capetonians....
Yup, I'm all about promoting young artists who are doing the best they can to provide a platform for their work, even whiney Capetonians. Do you have some art you would like me to promote? Or would you just like to come to a parking gallery opening? They could use some free whine.
I like Simon Gush's glove puppett wearing its Simon Gush outfit.
Awesome! Artheat is finally starting to grow, nice to here from you guys up in JHB, keep it coming!
(and try to ignore the xenophobia expressed within the context of promotion and ego bashing-it stems from terrible biting insecurity at the prospect of one day having to compete with artists outside of teeny tiny cape town)
thanks for posting about the gallery
gush gush gush
so Cape Town is small and isolated and miles from anywhere but Joburg is huge and close to... Krugersdorp? Harare? Very cosmopolitan.
I think if some people are behaving like cheesy wankers using this site as the Property Section, it's not xenophobic to think they're being wankers. Cos they are. And boring ones at that.
Have a look at the pics of his gallery, you might not be so keen on dissing the guy anymore. In fact you might be quite glad you know about it.
I'm interested in this 'real artist living in Cape Town'. Oh, you're real, eh? How very worthy of you, congratulation from the rest of us.
