Let It Rot

Tuesday, July 04, 2006

Apparently, the infamous Damien Hirst shark is rotting.
Hirst is in consultation with the work's owner Steve Cohen to refurbish the shark. The formaldehyde solution has gone cloudy and bits of the shark's skin are flaking off. The whole shark has become bloated and changed shape. Gross, I don't envy the Damien Hirst assistant who has to clean that mess up.

What I find slightly fishier, is that he's suddenly making these weird editions of the work, if I'd paid that much for a piece I'd be pretty annoyed if every tom dick and charlie had one floating around in their living room....

Leave it alone I say

Why should another shark die to allow Mr far-too-much-money Hirst to sniff further kilos of fasty-stuff off a plate, warmed in the microwave, up his nose?

And as for old moneybags Steven Cohen, he bought the corpse, let him keep it.

Animals are beings, not substances.

Leaving-alone is a much under utilised strategy.
