New Signatures Winners
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
Congratulations to Cillie Malan (whoever you are) for winning this year's New Signatures thingy. His video work called Motsebetsi ya Motsho ’Black Labour’ (Supa Market) is now the proud owner of R60 000. Double from last year, too. I have no idea what this video looks like, other than this picture, but the Sasol website calls it "an interesting mixture of styles. Although the content and look is weighty, the work moves beyond repetition. True to the style of New Media art, the unconventional language use is sophisticated, while the work remains direct and accessible." I'm glad at least that the winner isn't both weighty and repetitive. Furthermore, congratulations to Rat Western for running up with her untitled video installation
. Again wish we could see this stuff running on the site. Also someone called Gina Kraft for her performance piece... I hate performance art and especially the kind that wins competitions, so I won't talk about it.

Thanks Robert Sloon for keeping us abreast of all the art that's winning prizes in Johannesburg. And to all trhe Johannesburg correspondents for their very long, usually self-promoting and generally odd mailings from that blighted city. What would we silly Kaapenaars do without such info? Just sit on the beach, get drunk, and bitch about micaelis lecturers all day. Didn't one just win an award also?
