No Way In. William Scarborough's Reclamation at the Michaelis Gallery

Monday, September 11, 2006

I got a free T-Shirt (inexplicably X-Large) and DVD when I went to see Reclamation last week. And besides for the slight excitement of this, I left the show feeling perplexed. Admittedly, I was pressed for time and couldn't spend enough time there, and I might, to the show's credit, even go back for a second look. Nevertheless, I couldn't find a way in. It consisted of many of the things that fascinate me... conspiracy, the media, information, truth, etc. and was set-up in a brilliantly professional way (other artists might want to go and see this show just for that), but it needed a lot of reading. That is its biggest problem, it lacked immediacy. It does make up for this by having long-term spin-offs. The DVD will be an interesting watch, and the website is well set-up and warrants the time spent there, but this all requires investment. I guess I'll see if it makes any more sense when I find the time to spend with it.

What is the conceptual art equivalent of cock rock? It will apply to Scarborough's installation. There is enough powder coated steel to sink a biennale.
