Hindley Vs Murakami

Thursday, November 09, 2006

Lucky Matt. Cape Town's favourite artist-turned-painter is getting to show at the same time as Murakami's first solo show in SA. Stiff competition, but good exposure. I wish 34 on Long liked me. Read the press release here.

Matt's most successful artwork is his mind-numbing pretentiousness. At which he is head and shoulders above the rest, no question. He makes Ed look like a gullible kid. And watch him, it's going to work. It's the great South African philistine tradition. If his work was less ugly, he could get as big as Tretchikoff.

But this is deadful. Figurative Tanguy , like a revivalist metaphysician in a world generally believed to be without God, who's he kidding?
Oh, this would have been a great pulp cover in the early '50s: small town schoolkid taken by venusian's, installed at The Centre of Things as a kind of cyber ovum...

No one is as pretentious as Ed

It's amazing the way people seem to have fuck-all to say for themselves unless they're slagging Ed. Poor sad disempowered parasites.
