All Theory, No Audience. Avant Car Guard at the Bell-Roberts

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

I liked this show. It's a pity none of you were there. I think it was a cool idea, that would have been cooler had there been throngs of people there. But the Avant Car Guard guys really only have them selves to blame for the poor turn out... for this kind of thing you need good marketing, a bit of hype and not having your show at 7:30 on a Friday night. Or advertise free beer. Or show at a smaller gallery, where there isn't already a boring group show on display. blank projects could have worked. Get ten people there and you look packed. And next time send ArtHeat a personal invite, an advance copy delivered by a hot and easy groupie, and maybe a bottle of Three Ships. I'm the only dumbass out here that's going to write a word about your show.

As for what they did... I guess you could call it a conceptual art band (though one band member did mention the words "visual band", which I didn't like very much. Rock Stars should evade questions or shut up and look cool. Never define yourself.). They sold a book, cleverly disguised as a LP. And signed all the bought editions. And spent the night posing behind a table, like it was an album launch. The gallery was darkened. They sat in the back corner. Nice, simple, succinct.

The book was full of pictures of them being a band: dancing on Peerneef's grave (my personal favourite), drawing by a waterfall, a press conference, etc. They are using the idea of rock stars to sell the art which is all about being a rock star. Another art circle, but quite a lot of fun on the way. This sort of thing is right up my alley, and I'd like to see more initiatives like this: young artists having a bit of fun, playing with the system, looking cool.

You can also check out Michael McGarry's (one of the band members) website All Theory. No Practice. You can also find his phone number there if you want to leave rude messages.

On a different note, check out the ArtHeat ProjectSpace where Sebastian Charilaou has been very active during his residency.
