A Little Staid, A Little Steed

I hate to blow things out of proportion, but the photoshoot by Richard Keppel-Smith in this month's One Small Seed, the great document of local culture, was pretty disgusting...Now, I understand that shocking the bourgeoisie is a pretty standard thing to do in art, you get license to consider your self avant-garde. But I worry about it when male photographers start glamorising rape. Now... if it was anal carrot rape of male photographers... a different story.
Oh, and talking of small seeds, for some interesting photos, take a look at the Gillian Lochner photo's proceeding the Keppel-Smith kontoversy.

good on you Robert
I too found this shoot just plain nasty.
No humour, no guts, no taste, no point. And definitely, definitely, definitely in no way challenging stereotypes, whatever the ed and photographer say. Can you imagine shooting it? What do you say to the model: 'Look violated!'?
Thanks artheat
I totally agree with your comment and am glad to see that you feel the same. I know quite a few people who have mailed the editor to complain. He claims that it is open to interpretation but I fail to see what else the message could be.
the message could be the next stage of the tired old objectification/use and abuse of women argument in the media? or it could be a test to see how desensitised south africans actually are to this sort of thing, or it could be that mr keppel smith is in fact a dangerous mysoginist who ought to be more mindful of his sick fantasies leaking out and spoiling his career...
.....and i did check the lochner work - are you referring to a certain mr young's diddly little winkel? cute! an extra belly button! er...no wait i am dangerously close to sitting in the same boat as mr keppel - smith.......
Sorry guys, but I totally disagree with you, I loved the shoot. I thought it was really good and thought provoking.
I was also a fan of the shoot!
Its all good and well discriminating against Mr K. Smith for a previous shoot that may have been slighly disturbing, however, it is also neccessary to give credit where it is due, in this case for his latest 'one small seed shoot': "in your memory". I feel that he has managed to redeem himself in this spread. What is even more disturbing is that the photo shoot that follows this one, is one in which female, lesbian porn is seen as acceptable because of the sex of the photographer, perhaps it is in the name of art, but then I wonder, why all the cliche allusions to grave yards and corsets? As a women, I am more enraged by the tactless female imagery that is giving into patriarchal ideology (under the erroneous jusification of 'female' art) than the previousely berated shoot.
