The ArtHeat DataBase
Tuesday, June 05, 2007
ArtHeat proudly presents a new venture, The ArtHeat DataBase. The database is a long-term project, which aims to build an extensive resource of contemporary African artists, organizations and concepts, focusing initially on South Africa. The idea is to expand it and keep it relevant by a process of user-based content. It takes the form of a wiki, a page that a reader can edit through the browser, using a specific easy to learn language. In this way the site becomes a resource for, and by, the community. So sharpen your keyboard, and dive in. Start with a page on you, makes some links, and start sharing your knowledge.

i'm too afraid to write anything about myself, because i am afraid that people will write nasty things about me, like, they might point out i have too much hair or that i am a bad artist
also, as anonymous, i don't really have a fixed identity (you said tity, heh heh) so that would be hard to right about. sorry robert.
also please change the design of the database, please oh please!
also, i meant to spell 'right' like that ... it is a pun. yes that's right, a pun
really, really great idea. really bad sponsorship. artheat as archivist of serious SA art?
Give it a chance.
Here is what's really important to know about the system and vandalism... every change on the page is recorded. If you register as a user you watch certain pages, especially the ones you edit. This means that if there are any irrational changes or vandalism, then you can pick it up, and very simply revert to the latest version. Pages information is hotly debated can be locked, and compromises can be reached in that pages forum. Pages that get heavy vandalism can be locked and changes can be made through an administrator. I will not be the only administrator: the idea of the site is devolve power away from the centre so that no one person is in charge of the direction of the site. Administrator privileges will be given to people as they build a reputation for unbiased writing on the site.
Users that don't register do not gain a reputation on the site, and their edits are less likely to be respected.
In terms of design, registered users can select a skin, and view the site with whatever design they care to. The central design can be changed too, you just need to know how.
And I do think this is a really great idea. Any negativity is your own.
Fucking brilliant. go robert go
wow, thank you for taking it so seriously. i was just being stupid. sorry man, it is a good idea. i will try to help with it.
sorry man
Dear Robert
Thanks for this brilliant contribution to our lives! I am your fan for ever.
I want to know, is there a list of titles of all the pages created in this database, so that we can click on stuff we're interested in without having to do random searches hoping to hit something?
If you look in the sidebar, under the heading navigation, there should be a option saying content(a-z)
