Welcome Back Robert Sloon.

Saturday, December 15, 2007

My god. It's hell to be back in this city. It's so hot that it feels like I'm walking to the studio through a rutting goat. The only option available is to meekly stare at my computer screen and sip meekly on a rapidly decomposing beer. Then I had to go to Spier's opening. A wonderful welcome back. Our Special Spier Correspondence Sannie Prinkle will be reporting on that later, and I'll throw in my two cents after... but for the record the winners were Abrie Fourie; Chuma Sopotela, Mwenya Kabwe and Kemang WaLehulere; Bettina Malcomess, Rene Holleman and Linda Stupart; Nina Barnett and Robyn Nesbitt; Andrew Putter; and Peter van Heerden. Congratulations to them all.

This might just be hotter than studio 2666:

Athens - A Greek court acquitted the director of an art show on charges of obscenity and an attack on national symbols, citing freedom of expression, Greek newspapers reported Friday.

A video showing a woman masturbating to the Greek national anthem by Greek-American Eva Stefani was displayed at the Art Athina contemporary art show in Athens last June.

After a visitor reported the video to police, Art Athina director Michalis Argyros was arrested and charged.

He spent the night behind bars, provoking outcry from local artists, who mobilised to defend him.

At the trial held Thursday, the court ruled against the prosecutor, who had argued the video made no sense and that "Nudity is a work of art only in Renaissance paintings," the daily Eleftherotypia reported.

Works of art that slight religion or national symbols are actively pursued in Greece by followers of the Greek Orthodox Church and extreme right-wing political parties.
