TV and Art

It seems that the visual arts are attracting some airtime. While clearly the culture industry machine rolls on, hopefully the positive exposure will have some effect on our community:

Right Through the Arts, SABC2 21:00

Right Through the Arts is an innovative documentary-cum-reality series that challenges some of South Africa’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed artists to take just five days to make a new work in an unfamiliar medium. Produced by Hedwig Barry and Rory Bester for SABC 2, this six-part series gets up close and personal with artists to reveal their creative processes. Viewers are given a unique insight into how artists think and work in a particular medium, and how contemporary South African art is an integral part of conversations about the world around us.In the first episode of Right Through the Arts, Sam Nhlengethwa is challenged to bring one of his collages to life by using stop-frame animation and music by jazz supremo, Zim Ngqawana. Subsequent episodes of Right Through the Arts feature David Koloane (14 Sep), Dorothee Kreutzfeldt (21 Sep), Hasan and Husain Essop (28 Sep), Tracey Rose (5 Oct) and Kathryn Smith (12 Oct).

Channel Free:
This is a show on the arts on Cape Town's new CTV, a community run broadcast, which can tune into on UHF between SABC3 and e. The first show is on Friday at 8pm.
Should be interesting.

Jesus. Fuckin television. Douchebags. they fuckin never have anything on about art at all, and then suddenly there's this idea that artists have to make a new work in five days in a medium they're not used to. Effectively fucking up the possibility of resolving the work, so they will no doubt look like tossers. It would be total fucking news to most people in this country to hear that there is any art at all. They don't have to try and throw a novel slant on it... it's way too novel already.
Why not just actually find someone who can talk about art interestingly (think Matthew Collings) rather than making elaborate plans to come across like a wanker.

I totally agree with anon 10.12PM: I watched one the other night, with Bettina and Dorothee collaborating, and no disrespect to them (as both are fairly astute artists), but it ended up being an aimless trawl through unconnected ideas and unresolved beginnings, Gladwrapped in the focus-free ramblings of a voice-of-God narrator...

There are so many intelligent people in SA art who have something to say: why not do a simple series of interviews, instead of this bullshit conceit (now I'm thieving from anon 10.12)? Rory Bester should have known better...

ps anon 10.12, any chance you could call me on 083 493 4622 to discuss this for an article?
