pish?
fuck, lets hope so.
Kat = Winner.
Am so there. Wednesday night. awesome.
I would like to comment on Stupart's wisdom on the Hugo/Botes exhibition, pertaining solely to Hugo's works.
Would it be better if we had white midgets and penises, and bluffed the 'Other'?
This is art. This is 2009. This is also photography. If 'Othering', 'Blackness', 'Big Penises', and 'Reality' are all problematic for Stupart, she should stick to academics. The 'Others' have become a bigger industry than Hollywood. The 'Others' have more mineral wealth than the rest of the world.
Accept that difference is key. Difference is acceptance. Then you, like Hugo, will stop seeing the 'Other'.
Word is that Raymond Ackerman is sponsoring this exhibition. Apparently Muti manged to get hold of some funding as part of Pick 'n Pay's new National Arts Grant, launched alongside their rebranding campaign that was laanched last year.
the show is not curated
Adam,
I am assuming that you're one of Christian's new Stellenbosch students, considering the comment which clearly isn't relevant to this post. If so, hi. Otherwise, hi anyway.
Anyway, your comment makes very little sense. How would "accepting difference" (and what differences, exactly, are you referring to?) stop one from seeing "otherness" - surely, difference is what constructs notions of the other ("other" being the antonym of "same", and synonym, then, of "different").
Perhaps you are unaware of what these words mean. Otherwise, while I am happy to engage in a criticism of my own critique of both Hugo and Michael Stevenson, I certainly refuse to believe that "acknowledging difference" is the key, certainly without a VERY strong argument. Essentialist differences, to which you seem to refer, have been used for centuries to justify both racism and sexism - and are very dangerous.
Re. the notion that 'Others' are big business - well yes, I am well aware of that. As is Hugo. And Michael Stevenson. In fact, I think you'll find that that is largely the point of the review.
And no, I do not have any particular preference, artistic or otherwise, for white midgets.
i like it
Don't mess with Linda yo. Chick'll fuck you up.
Ha Ha.
Adam.
What an asshole.
has stupart's review (hugo/botes) something to do with the sudden disappearance of macmichaels logo from artthrob?
