My art is called egocentric-soft-porno Or maybe it's just narcissism... My one and only subject Goes from something like anything but Me-ism (lyrics from Art Bitch by CSS)
Mike Kelley once said, "I make art in order to give other people my problems." And I am all about making work that, while inherently narcissistic, manages to communicate angst, love, emotion and the turmoil of relationships and histories to an audience outside of the artist. For me, Julia Clark's curated exhibition, Sing in to My Mouth at Whatiftheworld is an excellent artwork in this vein. Even without reading the (great, sad and telling) stories accompanying each work, this exhibition oozes personal nostalgia, loss, whimsy and longing, while a younger, hot, naked Julia (as photographed by Pieter Hugo when they were dating) towers over the show. Though the exhibition is about the curator, and an excellent artwork as such, it is also full of some really interesting work and well worth seeing even if the curatorial model isn't really your cup of tea...
Of course, my response to the show may well also be linked to my own relationship(s) to both the artists and artworks on show. Just a few years beyond me, these works remind me of half-remembered student exams I snuck through as a first year student; or pretty boys I giggled at throughout art school while I too was making friends with Andrew Putter, watching Bruce Gordon getting sold and cutting children's books for Julia herself. All this aside though, there is genuinely good work on this meticulously curated exhibition, go look at it.
